UK Police Spy on Journalists

British newspaper The Mail on Sunday revealed that United Kingdom police had used the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) to uncover a newspaper's source for a report that implicated a government minister.

Hence, acting Interception of Communications Commissioner sir Paul Kennedy announced Monday the launch of an inquiry into the use of the act against journalists in the U.K.

RIPA allows authorities to pass on aquiring official authorization from a court to seize information for an investigation.

According to the Daily Dot, the British tabloid, The Sun, has also had phone records seized. The paper lodged a complaint this Monday, labeling the move an “assault on free press.” .... http://www.telesurtv.net
