Ice delays opening of Windsor port’s 2015 season

Lingering ice on the Great Lakes has delayed the opening of the 2015 shipping season by a least a week.

The new season hit pause earlier this month when the St. Lawrence Seaway System announced it wouldn’t open for business until April 2. The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway System originally planned on the usual start date of March 27.

“They can’t open the locks because of the ice,” said Windsor harbourmaster Peter Berry. “All it takes is one piece of ice to jam up a lock.”

The 2014 season opened March 28 following an early March 22 start in 2013.

Berry admits the last two winters have been “the most challenging” of his six as harbourmaster .... http://blogs.windsorstar.com
