Queen’s Speech Confirms U.K. Government’s Plan for EU Referendum

LONDON—Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II laid out the newly elected Conservative government’s legislative agenda on Wednesday, confirming plans for an in-out referendum on Britain’s membership in the European Union and to give additional powers to the government to crack down on terrorism.

In a speech to mark the official reopening of Parliament after the general election, the queen read out a list of bills that Prime MinisterDavid Cameron’s government will attempt to pass through Parliament over the coming session.

The speech came a day before the government is set to introduce the EU referendum bill to Parliament. The House of Commons—the lower house—is expected to vote on the government’s legislative agenda next week .... http://www.wsj.com
