At least 20 reported dead as Congolese security forces fire on protesters

KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo — Members of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s security forces opened fire Tuesday on protesters in Kinshasa and other cities who were demanding that President Joseph Kabila step down after his second term expired overnight, and human rights monitors said they had received reports that at least 20 people had been killed.

Scattered protests started on Tuesday, and an opposition leader, Étienne Tshisekedi, called on the Congolese people to peacefully resist Mr. Kabila, who is remaining in power beyond his constitutional mandate, with no election set to pick a successor .... http://www.nytimes.com
