J. Dennis Hastert, the former speaker of the House convicted of breaking financial rules in making payoffs to cover up his past sexual abuse of a teenager, wants back the $1.7 million he paid as part of a secret settlement, according to court documents.
The revelation came in papers filed on Wednesday in Circuit Court in Illinois by Mr. Hastert’s lawyer in response to a complaint by the accuser that he was still owed $1.8 million.
The accuser, identified in court papers only as James Doe, claimed in a filing in April that Mr. Hastert had promised to pay him $3.5 million but had paid only $1.7 million, and therefore had breached a settlement agreement .... https://www.nytimes.com
