According to the National Weather Service, the low temperature this morning at the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport was 9 degrees, which ties the record low for Jan. 24. That record was set in 1963.
The frigid temperatures prompted several mountain school districts to open late Friday.
A wind chill advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. Friday for many counties across western North Carolina and until 10 a.m. for the northern parts of Oconee, Pickens and Greenville counties.
