Sydney (AFP) - Convicted paedophiles will have their passports cancelled to prevent them travelling overseas to offend again under tough new laws which Australia Tuesday hailed as a "world first".

Legislation will be introduced to parliament this month making it illegal for registered offenders to leave or attempt to leave the country as part of a crackdown on child-sex tourism.

"The new laws will prohibit registered child sex offenders from leaving Australia or holding Australian passports," Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said.

Dennis Hastert Wants Accuser to Return $1.7 Million

J. Dennis Hastert, the former speaker of the House convicted of breaking financial rules in making payoffs to cover up his past sexual abuse of a teenager, wants back the $1.7 million he paid as part of a secret settlement, according to court documents.

The revelation came in papers filed on Wednesday in Circuit Court in Illinois by Mr. Hastert’s lawyer in response to a complaint by the accuser that he was still owed $1.8 million.

VIP child sex abuse: 14 new corruption inquiries leveled against London police

British police are alleged to have covered up cases of child sex abuse perpetrated by VIPs over a 40-year period. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has launched 14 new inquiries into Metropolitan Police conduct.

The IPCC now has 45 investigations into alleged police cover-ups underway, all of which involve “prominent individuals” in British society.

Pennsylvania grand jury finds 50 Roman Catholic priests raped hundreds of children

Hundreds of children in western Pennsylvania were sexually assaulted by about 50 Roman Catholic priests over four decades while bishops covered up their actions, according to a state grand jury report released on Tuesday.

The report found that former Altoona-Johnstown Diocese Bishop James Hogan, who died in 2005, and his successor, Joseph Adamec, who retired in 2011, worked to cover pedophile priests’ tracks and that some local law enforcement agencies also avoided investigating abuse allegations, said state Attorney General Kathleen Kane.

“The heinous crimes these children endured are absolutely unconscionable,” Kane told reporters in unveiling the report, based on a two-year investigation. “These predators desecrated a sacred trust and preyed upon their victims in the very places where they should have felt most safe.”

The Catholic Church is paying compensation to victims of alleged child sex abuse at its schools, but refuses to accept liability.

Leslie Turner, 66, was paid £17,000 in compensation in 2014 after saying two members of the Irish Christian Brothers order sexually abused him at a school in Sunderland in the 1960s.

Turner, a retired primary school teacher, alleges he was molested from the age of 12 by two teachers at St Aidan’s Roman Catholic grammar school between 1960 and 1967.

‘Jimmy Savile raped children as young as nine’ while working at BBC, leaked report finds

The BBC is condemned for having a "deferential culture" and "untouchable stars" in a leaked draft of a report into sexual abuse by broadcaster Jimmy Savile.

It also warns that it was possible another "predatory child abuser could be lurking undiscovered in the BBC even today".

Rapes, indecent assaults on both boys and girls, and incidents of "inappropriate sexual conduct" with teenagers over 16 were all "in some way associated with the BBC", the draft report states. Three of Savile's victims were only nine, it adds.

Incidents occurred at "virtually every one of the BBC premises" in which Savile worked, the report said, and more than 100 employees at the corporation told the review they had heard about Savile's sexual conduct.

While staff said they were aware of his behaviour, they were scared to report it to managers, the draft report, published by news website Exaro states.
