Spanish Marxist Professor Alfredo Serrano Is the Man Behind Venezuela’s Economic Mess

The main culprits of the most radical measures taken by the Venezuelan government come from Spanish politician Alfredo Serrano Mancilla, according to Spanish Adviser to President Nicolás Maduro Deputy Carlos Valero.

Spain's conservatives win election

Madrid (AFP) - Spain's incumbent conservatives finished stronger in Sunday's repeat election, winning more seats than in December polls though still without a majority, partial official results showed.

Exit polls had initially suggested that the far-left Unidos Podemos coalition had come second -- which would have been an unprecedented shift in Spain -- but official results showed it was actually in third place after the Socialists.

The election came just three days after Britain's shock vote to leave the European Union, pitting those hungry for change in a country with high unemployment against those who fear it would torpedo Spain's slow economic recovery.

Spain’s Podemos joins rival leftist party for June vote

Two leftist Spanish parties say they have reached a preliminary agreement to join forces in a coalition ahead of the upcoming general elections in the country.

Anti-austerity Podemos Party and its rival, Izquierda Unida (United Left or IU) agreed to create a joint list for the June 26 vote in a “serious coalition which will run to win the elections,” Pablo Iglesias, the Podemos leader, said on Monday.

13 killed as bus carrying foreign exchange students crashes in Spain

Amposta (Spain) (AFP) - Thirteen people were killed and 44 injured Sunday when a bus carrying foreign exchange students crashed in northeastern Spain, local authorities said.

All the dead were female, according to a regional government source who requested anonymity.

The students were on a European exchange programme in Catalonia and were from 16 different countries including Britain, Ukraine, Switzerland, Sweden but also Japan and New Zealand, said regional government official Jordi Jane.

Spain's Rajoy gives up bid to form government: official

Spain's acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Friday abandoned attempts to form a government due to lack of support in parliament, a statement issued by the royal palace said.

"His majesty the King nominated him to form a government. Mr Mariano Rajoy thanked his majesty the King but declined the offer," the statement said, a month after inconclusive elections. The king will now hold a fresh round of consultations to chose another candidate.
