Elon Musk offers glimpse of plans to deliver humans to Mars

GUADALAJARA, Mexico—It takes an audacious visionary to set out to colonize Mars—a planet no person has ever set foot on—in a venture to make humans a multi-planetary species. But that’s the goal Elon Musk has always had for SpaceX, the upstart space company that has pulled off a series of unlikely triumphs since he founded it 14 years ago.

On Tuesday, SpaceX published a video showing its new Mars rocket and spacecraft that are designed to send the first humans to Mars.

Elon Musk is scheduled to discuss his plan at 2:30 p.m. at the International Astronautical Congress here titled “Making Humans a Multiplanetary Species.” .... https://www.washingtonpost.com

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos: We Should Settle Mars 'Because It's Cool'

On Tuesday night, Bezos told an audience of technologists at the Code Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. why Blue Origin, his mysterious spaceflight company, carries so much potential.

He spent several minutes outlining his desire to develop outer space. Humans should move heavy industrial facilities off the planet and into space, Bezos argued, where energy from the sun is limitless and available around the clock. Earth instead ought to be “rezoned” for residential and light commercial use.

“We could build gigantic chip factories in space and just send little bits down,” he said. “We don’t have to build them here.”

But then, sensing the obvious next question from the audience, Bezos interrupted himself to declare:

“We will settle Mars. And we should, because it’s cool.” .... http://fortune.com

Europe-Russia mission departs on hunt for life on Mars

Baikonur (Kazakhstan) (AFP) - A joint European-Russian mission aiming to search for traces of life on Mars left Earth's orbit Monday at the start of a seven-month unmanned space journey to the Red Planet, space agency managers said.

The Proton rocket carrying the Trace Gas Orbiter to examine Mars' atmosphere and a descent module that will conduct a test landing on its surface had earlier launched from the Russian-operated Baikonur cosmodrome in the Kazakh steppe at 0931 GMT.

The spacecraft detached from its Briz-M rocket booster just after 2000 GMT before beginning its 496-million-kilometre (308-million-mile) voyage through the cosmos, the European Space Agency (ESA) said.

The ExoMars 2016 mission, a collaboration between the ESA and its Russian equivalent Roscosmos, is the first part of a two-phase exploration aiming to answer questions about the existence of life on Earth's neighbour .... http://news.yahoo.com

Why early risers could be banned from travelling to Mars

Early risers could be banned from travelling to Mars after scientists found they have the wrong internal clock for life on the Red Planet.

New research has shown that circadian body clock which matches planet speed is essential for a healthy life and reproduction.

A team of scientists from Holland, Germany and the UK’s University of Manchester studied animals in which variation in a single gene speeded up the natural circadian cycle from 24 to 20 hours .... http://www.telegraph.co.uk

Elon Musk worries World War III may stop him conquering Mars

In a recent lengthy interview, the man behind Paypal, Tesla and SpaceX has confessed that he feels another World War is more real than it may seem.

“You know, in 1912 they were proclaiming a new age of peace and prosperity, saying that it was a golden age, war was over. And then you had World War I, followed by World War II, followed by the Cold War. So I think we need to acknowledge that there’s certainly a possibility of a third World War, and if that does occur it could be far worse than anything that’s happened before,” he told GQ.

In his inimitable fashion, Musk likens the Mars operation to backing up a computer: "You back up your hard drive.... Maybe we should back up life, too?”

Elon Musk believes Mars is the perfect destination, it just needs a bit of heating. After one of his TV appearances he was quoted for proposing nuking Mars, a bold statement that he later had to explain.

Musk dismissed earlier comments that he intended to nuke the planet’s surface. He said he wanted to create aerial explosions to heat it up, likening it to placing suns at each pole .... https://www.rt.com

Mars’ moon Phobos slowly falling apart

The mysterious grooves on Phobos are likely early signs of structural failure. Scientists expect the moon to be pulled apart in 30 to 50 million years.

Numerous, mysterious, long, shallow grooves on Phobos – the larger and closer of Mars’ two moons – have been known since 1976, when the two Viking orbiters flew near .... https://earthsky.org

‘Leaked NASA Film’ Shows Manned Mission To Mars In 1973

A film supposedly leaked from NASA shows blurry footage from a manned mission to Mars – in 1973 - and is touted by UFO fans as ‘proof’ we have been to Mars.

The film begins with a sign saying, ‘Not for public distribution.’

Viewers have pointed out that the film seems to use the wrong logo for NASA - and others suggest that it’s been created using NASA stills of Mars in an editing programme.

Conspiracy theorists believe that there was a ‘secret space programme’, codenamed Project Redsun, when humans landed on Mars in the late 60s or early 70s .... https://uk.news.yahoo.com

Rush Limbaugh Says His Remarks About Mars Were Taken Out Of Context

Rush Limbaugh criticized Politico and other media outlets for reporting on his remarks that NASA's discovery of water of Mars was part of a "left-wing agenda," claiming the remarks were taken out of context. However, when asked by Politico to explain how, a Limbaugh spokesman refused to explain.

On the September 28 edition of his show, Limbaugh, talking about NASA's announcement that day it had discovered liquid water on Mars, claimed NASA had been "corrupted by the current regime" and, referencing global warming, asked, "what's to stop them from making up something that happened on Mars that will help advance their left-wing agenda on this planet?"

Limbaugh doubled down on his remarks the next day, claiming Media Matters took his remarks "out of context" and that "Obama has turned NASA over to Muslim outreach." .... http://mediamatters.org

NASA finds "strong" evidence for liquid water on Mars

U.S. space agency NASA announced on Monday it has found "strong" evidence that there is liquid water intermittently flowing on present-day Mars.

Images taken from the Mars orbit showed dark, finger-like markings that, typically less than five meters in width, appear on slopes during warm seasons, lengthen and then fade during cooler seasons on the Red Planet .... http://news.xinhuanet.com

Monolith on Mars Moon Phobos

The Phobos Mystery. The Mystery Moon of Mars

In July 1988, the Russians launched two unmanned satellite probes - Phobos 1 and phobos 2 - in the direction of Mars, and with the primary intention of investigating the planet's mysterious moon, Phobos. Phobos 1 was unfortunately lost en route two months later, reportedly because of a radio command error. Phobos 2 was also ultimately lost in the most intriguing circumstances, but not before it had beamed back certain images and information from the planet Mars itself .... https://www.youtube.com

Did MARS once have OCEANS? Curiosity discovers continental crust

NASA's nuclear-powered Curiosity rover has aimed its ChemCam laser at some unusually light-coloured rocks on Mars and discovered surprising similarities between them and the rocks of Earth's granitic continental crust.

The evidence of a "continental crust" on Mars is a huge discovery from the space-tank, now rumbling over the red planet's cotta surface with an unbroken arm .... http://www.theregister.co.uk

Billions on wars & only $29K to make Mars mission possible?

The US spends billions a week on invading countries and losing wars but all it can offer for breakthrough ideas on protecting astronauts from possible space radiation on their way to Mars is $29,000, political cartoonist Ted Rall told RT.

Since the Mars One project was founded four years ago, more than 200,000 candidates have been evaluated and billions of dollars spent. But today it seems the project is deadlocked as one critical issue was forgotten about - what to do about deadly space radiation. Though NASA has leading scientists and nearly a dozen specialized centers of research in this field it seems unable to conquer the problem on its own and has decided to seek help from the public. It is offering $29,000 to anyone who can figure out how to get astronauts safely to Mars with as little exposure to space radiation as possible .... http://rt.com

Mars needs TRAFFIC COP to stop probe prangs, says NASA

NASA has “beefed up” the processes it uses to stop orbiters around Mars from colliding with each other, after two orbiters came within two kilometres of each other in early January.

Humanity currently has five live orbiters around the red planet, namely NASA's MAVEN, Mars Odyssey and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), plus India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) and the European Space Agency's Mars Express. NASA's Mars Global Surveyor is bricked but is still in orbit.

Many of the orbiters' orbits intersect: the image at the top of this story shows that India's MOM, for example, cuts across the orbit of three other craft and Mars' two moons.

MAVEN's arrival last year complicated matters, because it too intersects other visitors' orbits .... http://www.theregister.co.uk

Why Elon Musk is so hellbent on going to Mars

Musk didn’t hesitate. “Humans need to be a multiplanet species,” he replied.

And pretty much at that moment my thinking reorganized itself. He didn’t need to explain his reasoning; I agree with that statement, and I’ve written about it many times. Exploration has its own varied rewards ... and a single global catastrophe could wipe us out. Space travel is a means to mitigate that, and setting up colonies elsewhere is a good bet. As Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (the father of modern rocketry) said, “The Earth is the cradle of humanity, but one cannot live in the cradle forever.” .... http://www.businessinsider.com

Why Is There Such A Martian Cover-Up?

I find their recent work on the Cydonia ruins on Mars to be very intriguing, with their description of an advanced, human civilization in the remote past, including underground tunnels, high-speed shuttle trains and large, architectural constructions, all of which was destroyed by planetary cataclysm a very long time ago. Indeed, there are photos that have come back from Mars that clearly depict very large, heavily eroded, ancient ruins.

Look at the obvious, rectangular, heavily eroded structure in the top of the photo here, that is canted to the side. NASA has a great deal of photographic evidence of ancient, eroded structures on Mars. This is one small part of that evidence .... http://eventhorizonchronicle.blogspot.co.uk
