Venezuela signs deal to provide Palestinian Authority with oil

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicholas Maduro, have struck a deal which will see 240,000 barrels of oil and diesel sent to the Palestinian Authority by state-owned company Petróleos de Venezuela.

During his three-day visit to the oil rich South American nation, which sits on the world’s largest oil reserves, Abbas thanked Maduro for his support.

“Thank you Venezuela for helping to break the monopoly that Israel has over our economy. Thank you Venezuela for responding to our needs. Thank you Venezuela for being available to continue to lend the Palestinian people more support in their fight,” said Abbas.

Ukip and Nigel Farage on course for remarkable victory in European elections

The UK Independence Party is on course to win the largest share of the vote in elections for the European Parliament in May, according to a ComRes opinion poll for The Independent on Sunday. 

Nigel Farage’s Ukip is in the lead on 30 per cent, two points ahead of Labour, on 28 per cent, with the Conservatives in third place on 21 per cent and the Liberal Democrats on only 8 per cent.

Such a result would be a remarkable victory for a party with no MPs, and would probably double Ukip’s 13 seats in the Brussels parliament that it won four years ago. European pension funds increase Israel boycott pressure

According to a report in The Financial Times today, three major European pension funds with a combined total of almost €500 billion of assets are “reviewing their holdings in Israeli banks over concerns that the banks finance illegal Israeli settlements in Palestinian-occupied territories.”

The three investors are Dutch ABP, the world’s third-largest pension fund, Nordea Investment Management, and DNB Asset Management. 'Mr Blair, this is a citizen's arrest': Shoreditch restaurant employee confronts Tony Blair in middle of meal with family

Tony Blair was targeted in an attempted citizen's arrest last week as he dined with family and friends in a London restaurant.

The former Prime Minister was reportedly confronted by a staff member who accused him of being a war criminal as he ate at the Tramshed restaurant in Shoreditch on Friday evening.

Named as Twiggy Garcia, the staff member said he noticed an "eerie presence" in the upmarket steak restaurant before realising Mr Blair was among the customers. The man then approached the former Prime Minister.

Ukip tops Independent on Sunday poll as the nation’s favourite party

The UK Independence Party is the nation’s favourite political party, a poll for The Independent on Sunday reveals today.

Voters regard Nigel Farage’s party more favourably than Labour, the Conservatives or the Liberal Democrats. The surprising finding will underline concerns inside the mainstream Westminster parties that Ukip is on course to come first in May’s European elections and could deny Labour or the Tories an outright victory in next year’s general election.

What is more, Mr Farage is favoured over Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg as a party leader, beaten only by David Cameron, the ComRes survey reveals. Ukip is the favourite choice of 27 per cent of voters, while Labour is favoured by 26 per cent. The Conservatives are next, on 25 per cent, and the Lib Dems last, on 14 per cent. Although the differences in the first three parties are within the margin of error, the findings will fuel unease inside Downing Street that the Prime Minister has failed to close down the question of Europe and that Ukip’s support remains strong. Chemical arms experts hail cooperation from Syria

The head of the international body tasked with the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons has hailed the country’s cooperation in bringing about the progress the mission made over the past month.

Sigrid Kaag, the head of the joint mission of the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), made the remarks in a statement issued on Tuesday after she briefed the UN Security Council on the issue.

During a conference call with analysts Tuesday, a Coca-Cola executive noted that the soda brand was 'under a bit of pressure' because of people's concerns over its ingredients, alluding to the growing wariness of artificial sweeteners in recent years.

Syria agrees to Russian request put its chemical weapons under international control

Damascus welcomes Russia’s call to hand control over its chemical weapons to the international community, the Syrian Foreign Minister said responding to Sergey Lavrov’s statement after the two met in the Russian capital.
