Astronomers say we could be just 10 years away from finding alien life

On May 2, an international team of astronomers announced that they had discovered three Earth-sized exoplanets, all orbiting the same star (TRAPPIST-1) just 40 light-years from us.

The scientists determined that all three planets are potentially habitable based on their size and temperature.

Russian space agency begins moon landing simulations

Russian space agency Roscosmos and top spacecraft manufacturer RSC Energia have begun simulating a manned landing on the moon, using a unique gravity imitation platform.

The researchers used Selen, a unique platform simulating the moon’s gravity, built by RSC Energia in the early 1970s. The experiments, performed by Mark Serov of Roscosmos’ test flight department and Energia’s cosmonaut instructor Alexander Kaleri, focused on the cosmonaut’s ability to get in and out of the rover as well as walking on the lunar surface.

China on Sunday hoisted the final piece into position on what will be the world's largest radio telescope, which it will use to explore space and help in the hunt for extraterrestrial life, state media said.

The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope, or FAST, is the size of 30 football fields and has been hewed out of a mountain in the poor southwestern province of Guizhou.

NASA has officially confirmed that Earth has a second moon that has been around longer than you think

The asteroid’s movements are complicated, as it spends half of its time closer to the sun than Earth and passes it before our planet, and then spends the other half of its time even farther away from us, causing it to eventually fall behind. The orbit is slightly tilted, causing it to engage in a bobbing motion once a year. Over multiple decades, 2016 HO3 also does a slow, back-and-forth twist.

US government expected to approve first private moon mission

US officials may approve a commercial mission to the moon, putting space travel beyond Earth’s orbit in the purview of the private sector for the first time in history.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that the government is close to officially endorsing a mission for space startup Moon Express, citing unnamed sources.

Once the details are worked out, the company will send a craft to escort a 20-pound payload of scientific gear to the moon in the second half of 2017.

"We've been a regulatory pathfinder out of necessity," because up until now "only governments have undertaken space missions beyond Earth orbit," Moon Express founder and CEO Bob Richards told the Journal.

On Tuesday night, Bezos told an audience of technologists at the Code Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. why Blue Origin, his mysterious spaceflight company, carries so much potential.

He spent several minutes outlining his desire to develop outer space. Humans should move heavy industrial facilities off the planet and into space, Bezos argued, where energy from the sun is limitless and available around the clock.
