Three astronauts blast off for ISS in upgraded Soyuz craft

Three astronauts blasted off Thursday from Russia's Baikonur Cosmodrome towards the International Space Station in an upgraded Soyuz spacecraft.

First-time astronauts Kathleen Rubins of NASA and Takuya Onishi of the Japanese space agency set off for a four-month mission at the ISS with two-time Russian cosmonaut Anatoly Ivanishin at 0136 GMT.

NASA ‘inadequate,’ Turkish technology ‘better’ – Turkish minister

Surprisingly, NASA’s technology has recently come under fire from… Turkey’s Forestry and Waterworks Minister Veysel Eroglu, who called it “inadequate,” asserting that Turkish science is “better.”

“Who does NASA think it is? We are better than them,” Eroglu said during a discussion in Turkey’s parliament, as cited by Hurryiet Daily News.

“They might have satellites but we have our Göktürk,” he said, referring to Turkey’s civil and military observation satellite.

The minister also argued that Turkish technology is ahead of NASA’s, stressing that the weather forecasts of the US agency, which is in charge of aeronautics and aerospace research, had not been accurate over the past year. Apollo 10 declassified tapes to reveal puzzling ‘musical’ transmission from Moon’s dark side

Another reminder of space being a creepy place has been presented in the lost Apollo 10 tapes – the mission that circled over to the dark side of the Moon. The tapes contain strange ‘music’ that was received out of Earth’s signal reach.

The mission happened in May just ahead of Apollo 11’s 1969 moon landing two months later. The recordings recovered from Apollo 10 were only declassified in 2008 and will now be played on the Science Channel’s Unexplained Files coming up later this month.

New type of moon rock discovered by Chinese lunar lander

The Yutu rover, part of the Chang’e-3 unmanned lunar mission, has identified a type of basalt unlike anything collected by previous Soviet or US missions.

Chinese scientists have identified a new kind of rock on the moon. An unmanned Chinese lunar lander, launched in 2013, has explored an ancient flow of volcanic lava and identified mineral composition entirely unlike anything collected by the American astronauts between 1969 and 1972, or by the last Soviet lander in 1976.

The news, dispatched from an impact crater in the Mare Imbrium, is another reminder that planetary exploration is no longer the preserve of the Russians, the Americans or the European Space Agency: Japan, India and China have all launched lunar orbiters on their own rockets. 49 Former NASA Scientists Send A Letter Disputing Climate Change

Some prominent voices at NASAare fed up with the agency's activist stance toward climate change.

The following letter asking the agency to move away from climate models and to limit its stance to what can be empirically proven, was sent by 49 former NASA scientists and astronauts.

The letter criticizes the Goddard Institute For Space Studies especially, where director Jim Hansen and climatologist Gavin Schmidt have been outspoken advocates for action.

German Scientist Accused NASA of ‘Massive’ Temperature Alterations

A German scientist has accused the National Aeronautics and Space Agency’s (NASA) Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS) of altering temperature records between 2010 and 2012 to produce the illusion that the Earth has been warming since 1950.

GISS datasets are used by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to document global warming.

In a presentation at the 2012 EIKE Climate Conference in Germany, Professor Friedrich-Karl Ewert, a retired geologist and data expert from theUniversity of Paderborn, said that he examined publicly available archived temperature records from 1,153 weather stations around the globe going back to 1881 and found evidence of “massive” tampering by GISS between 2010 and 2012 .... http://www.cnsnews.com

Antarctica is actually gaining ice, says NASA. Is global warming over?

A new NASA study found that Antarctica has been adding more ice than it's been losing, challenging other research, including that of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, that concludes that Earth’s southern continent is losing land ice overall.

In a paper published in the Journal of Glaciology on Friday, researchers from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, the University of Maryland in College Park, and the engineering firm Sigma Space Corporation offer a new analysis of satellite data that show a net gain of 112 billion tons of ice a year from 1992 to 2001 in the Antarctic ice sheet.

New high definition images snapped by NASA's Hubble Telescope have captured Jupiter in a whole new light, revealing previously unknown details about the gas giant. Scientists used the pictures to create a 4K video of the planet's rotation.

‘Leaked NASA Film’ Shows Manned Mission To Mars In 1973

A film supposedly leaked from NASA shows blurry footage from a manned mission to Mars – in 1973 - and is touted by UFO fans as ‘proof’ we have been to Mars.

The film begins with a sign saying, ‘Not for public distribution.’

Viewers have pointed out that the film seems to use the wrong logo for NASA - and others suggest that it’s been created using NASA stills of Mars in an editing programme.
