US government expected to approve first private moon mission

US officials may approve a commercial mission to the moon, putting space travel beyond Earth’s orbit in the purview of the private sector for the first time in history.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that the government is close to officially endorsing a mission for space startup Moon Express, citing unnamed sources.

Once the details are worked out, the company will send a craft to escort a 20-pound payload of scientific gear to the moon in the second half of 2017.

"We've been a regulatory pathfinder out of necessity," because up until now "only governments have undertaken space missions beyond Earth orbit," Moon Express founder and CEO Bob Richards told the Journal.

The company is one of 16 that is competing for the Google Lunar X prize, which will award $20 million to the first firm to land a craft on the moon that can travel across the surface of the moon and send photographs back to Earth .... https://www.rt.com/usa

Apollo 10 declassified tapes to reveal puzzling ‘musical’ transmission from Moon’s dark side

Another reminder of space being a creepy place has been presented in the lost Apollo 10 tapes – the mission that circled over to the dark side of the Moon. The tapes contain strange ‘music’ that was received out of Earth’s signal reach.

The mission happened in May just ahead of Apollo 11’s 1969 moon landing two months later. The recordings recovered from Apollo 10 were only declassified in 2008 and will now be played on the Science Channel’s Unexplained Files coming up later this month.

So, what was strange about those recordings? Besides the fact that they contained a very musical dance of frequencies and noise, it was the fact that they could not have come from any manmade source, as there’s no radio signal on the far side of the Moon .... https://www.rt.com/usa

Revealed: Russia's Crewed Lunar Lander

Although any future human trip to the Moon is still at least a decade away, behind the scenes, the next-generation lunar lander has already appeared on the drawing board—or more precisely, on a computer screen in Russia.

The four-legged machine will be able to take at least two cosmonauts from a lunar orbit to the surface of the Moon. It is being developed for Russia's own strategic goals in human space flight and, more importantly, for possible international cooperation, if the politics make it possible.

The nearly 20-ton spacecraft superficially resembles the famous Eagle lunar module, which delivered Neal Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the Moon, but the new Russian design is currently tailored for a smaller, cheaper Angara-5V rocket rather than a giant Moon rocket, like NASA's Saturn V from the Apollo era .... http://www.popularmechanics.com

China aims to be first to land on dark side of moon

China has announced plans to make the first ever landing on the dark side of the moon in 2018, which would be a new milestone for the ambitious Chinese lunar program.

China is going to send the Chang’e-4 probe to the dark side of the moon in 2018, according to China’s State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND), Xinhua news agency reports.

“The Chang’e-4’s lander and rover will make a soft landing on the back side of the moon, and will carry out in-place and patrolling surveys,”Liu Jizhong, the Chinese lunar exploration chief, said on Thursday, as cited by the Guardian.

He added that the spacecraft would explore geological conditions on the dark side, which is never visible to the Earth because of gravitational forces and is, therefore, poorly explored .... https://www.rt.com

New type of moon rock discovered by Chinese lunar lander

The Yutu rover, part of the Chang’e-3 unmanned lunar mission, has identified a type of basalt unlike anything collected by previous Soviet or US missions.

Chinese scientists have identified a new kind of rock on the moon. An unmanned Chinese lunar lander, launched in 2013, has explored an ancient flow of volcanic lava and identified mineral composition entirely unlike anything collected by the American astronauts between 1969 and 1972, or by the last Soviet lander in 1976.

The news, dispatched from an impact crater in the Mare Imbrium, is another reminder that planetary exploration is no longer the preserve of the Russians, the Americans or the European Space Agency: Japan, India and China have all launched lunar orbiters on their own rockets. Britain launched its own satellite, Prospero, on its own rocket, Black Arrow, from its own launch site in Woomera, Australia, in 1971 and then withdrew from the space race .... http://www.theguardian.com

Russia Is Planning To Build A Permanent Manned Base On The Moon

Russia’s space agency is planning to build a manned moon base - launching modules into space on six separate rockets.

Russia plans to launch a lunar probe in 2024 which will scout possible locations - before landing a man on the moon in 2030.

Construction of the Luna 25 lander has already begun, the official state news agency Tass has reported.

Once the components are in place, assembly of the moon base will continue over ten years.

Moscow has previously said that it envisages the base being permanent.

Last year, deputy premier Dmitry Rogozin said: 'We are coming to the moon forever.' .... https://uk.news.yahoo.com

Men on the Moon: Russia hopes to launch manned lunar mission in 2029

Russia says it will launch a manned mission to the Moon in 2029, according to the Russian space agency, Roscosmos. A spacecraft for the venture is currently being built. Its maiden flight is expected to take place in 2021.

Vladimir Solntsev, head of Roscomsos Energia, made the announcement on Tuesday, saying, “A manned flight to the moon and lunar landing is planned for 2029.”

The spacecraft, specially designed to carry out missions to the moon, is being built in Moscow. Its first scheduled flight is due to take place in 2021, Sputnik reports.

The subsequent plan will be for the spacecraft to dock with the International Space Station in 2023 and then send an unmanned mission to the Moon in 2025 .... https://www.rt.com

Russia and Europe to launch joint mission to dark side of Moon, then build base there

The European Space Agency (ESA) is set to join Russia’s ambitious plan to colonize the Moon, with an announcement that it will provide key tech for a planned exploration mission in 2020, and possibly help construct a permanent outpost.

Announced by Russia’s space agency Roscosmos last November, Luna 27 is a robotic lander that will land in the South Pole–Aitken basin, a giant crater on the dark side of the Moon, and prospect it for resources that could be utilized by future moon-dwellers .... https://www.rt.com

Rare Supermoon Lunar Eclipse Is Just One Week Away

The supermoon lunar eclipse of 2015 will occur Sunday, Sept. 27, and is a confluence of three events: a full moon; a lunar eclipse, in which the Earth blocks the sun's light from hitting the moon; and lunar perigee, when the moon is in the closest part of its orbit to Earth. The last time such a confluence happened was in 1982; there were just five instances of it in the 20th century. This time around, viewers looking from the Americas, Europe, Africa, western Asia and the eastern Pacific Ocean will have a chance to see the show .... http://www.space.com

Monolith on Mars Moon Phobos

The Phobos Mystery. The Mystery Moon of Mars

In July 1988, the Russians launched two unmanned satellite probes - Phobos 1 and phobos 2 - in the direction of Mars, and with the primary intention of investigating the planet's mysterious moon, Phobos. Phobos 1 was unfortunately lost en route two months later, reportedly because of a radio command error. Phobos 2 was also ultimately lost in the most intriguing circumstances, but not before it had beamed back certain images and information from the planet Mars itself .... https://www.youtube.com
